MF Launches "Multifeed JPNAP Tokyo II Service"

TOKYO, JAPAN - INTERNET MULTIFEED CO. ("MF"; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Koichi Suzuki) announced today that from January 2008, the company will start providing the "Multifeed JPNAP Tokyo II Service," a second commercial IX (Internet Exchange) service in the Tokyo metropolitan area that will be independent of the "Multifeed JPNAP Service"[1] currently provided in the Otemachi area of Tokyo.

With the rapid growth of broadband over the past few years, the Internet environment in Japan has been experiencing increasingly rapid growth in traffic. Growth is expected to continue accelerating as new services such as video streaming become more popular. At the same time, users will require greater stability and security for the Internet as a social infrastructure.

MF has been providing the "Multifeed JPNAP Osaka Service" since 2001 to ensure smooth traffic exchange in western Japan and for serious disaster recovery in the Tokyo metropolitan area. However, to hedge against localized risk in the Tokyo Otemachi area, the hub of the Internet in Japan, and to further improve high availability and reliability for customer networks, MF will be establishing a new IX point within the Tokyo region. By providing the "Multifeed JPNAP Tokyo II Service," MF aims to achieve primary site distribution of customer networks in the Tokyo metropolitan area and topological redundancy. Another aim by extension is to obtain enhanced security for the Internet in Japan as a whole and achieve greater efficiency in traffic exchange and distribution.

Internet service providers NEC BIGLOBE, @nifty/FENICS, IIJ, and OCN are planning to use this service.

MF is committed to playing a pioneering role in continued growth of the Internet, providing services that support this growth and that contribute to improving the reliability of vital public infrastructure.

1. Service Overview

The "Multifeed JPNAP Tokyo II Service" will be established in Toshima-ku, Tokyo, as an IX point that is completely independent, both logically and physically, of the "Multifeed JPNAP Service" currently being provided in the Tokyo Otemachi area in Chiyoda-ku. The new service will also offer the same service options, system configuration, high availability, and high service quality provided by the "Multifeed JPNAP Service." Besides improving interconnectivity among carriers engaged in such operations as ISP, ICP, IDC, cable TV and CDN, using the new service will distribute interconnectivity among carriers in the Otemachi area of Tokyo, enabling the redundancy of networks in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
